Cleaning and repairing your windows registry is like giving your computer a good tuneup. Over time, your computers file entries become corrupted or bloated and need to be scanned and cleaned. While you can edit your registry manually it is usually not recommended. Even the most experienced computer technicians have difficulty doing this.

However, if you do want to attempt it manually make sure you backup everything first. It would be wise to create a restore point in your computer before editing any files. And backup your complete registry, just in case. You can access your files by typing C:\Windows\regedit.exe into your run box, from your start menu. Windows vista did away with the run box so you will have to add it back or hit the windows icon and R on your keyboard.

You can also type the command into the search box for Vista, and it will bring up regedit. From there, you can edit or delete the file that is giving you problems if you know which one it is. The problem is scrolling through the thousands of files to find the right one.

There is an easier way to maintain or repair your registry, and that is by downloading third-party software for registry repair. This way is so much simpler and safer. You will not be deleting any files that your computer needs to run on. Plus it will do a much better job than you will be able to do manually. The software will find any orphaned files that you no longer need. All these do is slow your computers operations down. Anytime you uninstall a program, registry entries usually get left behind.

Your system becomes corrupt or bloated by uninstalling software, viruses, spyware, improper shutdowns, power losses, or incorrect system settings. If you are experiencing blue screens, lockups or freezes, system crashes, slow at times, slow shutdown times, or very slow program loading you probably have registry errors. They need to be repaired as soon as possible, before your system gets unusable.

Most professional editors and utilities will allow you to schedule routine maintenance. You can set your scheduling times at night or weekends when you’re not using your computer. Weekly scans should be done to maintained a smooth running PC. Some of the better programs will allow you to remove software from your start menu. Removing unused programs will enable you to boot up a lot faster. There’s no need to load programs that you don’t use daily.
